About EileanMusic

eilean [pron. ellen], n., island (Gaelic)

EileanMusic specialises in music for education. Our sheet music range caters for a variety of instrumental combinations and abilities. Focusing on elementary ensemble experiences, the music is always interesting for all the performers. Even the simplest parts have singable tunes with catchy rhythms, and are never just simplisitic dilutions of a harder, otherwise unplayable, melody.

Many pieces include percussion parts which give extra vitality, and are especially useful in classrooms where not all children take instrumental lessons, or to give players of pitched instruments an alternative role.

You’ll find our catalogue has enjoyable differentiated pieces for weekly ensemble or classroom orchestras, stimulating repertoire for music making days and courses, and show pieces for end of term concerts and festivals.

EileanMusic also offers consultancy to anyone involved in delivering the music curriculum, and creative workshops for education and industry.

EileanMusic is owned and managed by Christine Hurley BMus ARCM PGCE DipNCOS

Christine Hurley

Christine Hurley has worked across a wide spectrum of music education as a classroom and instrumental teacher, conductor, adjudicator and music education consultant.

She trained at London’s Royal College of Music and for many years was a professional cellist with orchestras and ensembles in Britain and Ireland. During this time, Christine undertook a number of outreach projects, taking music into schools and communities, and it was here that she developed an affinity for enabling all kinds of people to compose and perform music.

Christine went on to work as a instrumental teacher and conductor in a variety of settings. She has taught cello, recorder, ocarina and whole-class mixed strings, as well as running improvisation groups and ceilidh bands, and training young singers for musicals. She has worked on a number of innovative music projects using vocal and instrumental skills with children, including Hertfordshire’s collaborative project with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and their Wider Opportunities programme.

The pieces in the EileanMusic catalogue have been composed by Christine in order to expand the repertoire for junior ensembles. Some were commissioned by other music teachers, some for Christine’s own use. They have been extremely well received by teachers, pupils and audiences at concerts, music courses and festivals, and reflect a real understanding of the needs of young musicians.

A frequent visitor to the Isle of Harris in recent years, Christine performed with the Richmond Trio at the Harris Arts Festival in 2006. In 2008, Christine moved permanently to the island, and developing EileanMusic will be will be one of her ongoing projects. She was appointed conductor of the Harris Gaelic Choir, Coisir Eilean na Hearadh, in 2008. Christine Hurley is currently Artistic Director of the Harris Arts Festival.
